Culligan Water Treatment Chemicals in Oman: Bio Guard and Scale Guard
Culligan water treatment chemicals cover two duties that most plants in Oman need every month: scale control on reverse osmosis membranes and microbiological control on cooling water. UV Water Systems stocks Culligan Scale Guard 50M17 and Culligan Bio Guard 41H01 in 25 kg packing in Muscat.
This article sets out what each product does, the dose rates that work on Omani water, and how to decide between them and the alternatives.
Culligan Scale Guard 50M17 RO Antiscalant
Scale Guard 50M17 is a liquid antiscalant for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration plants. It holds calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, strontium sulphate and silica in solution in the concentrate stream so they leave the plant with the reject rather than depositing on the membrane.
Where it performs well in Oman is on high-sulphate brackish well water, which is common in the interior and along the Batinah coast. Wells that cannot run above 60% recovery on a carbonate-only inhibitor will often reach 75% with 50M17 at the correct dose.
| Application | Dose range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal feed RO | 2 – 3 ppm | Dilute to 10% for small plants |
| Brackish well RO | 3 – 5 ppm | Confirm with feed analysis |
| High sulphate or high silica | 4 – 7 ppm | Projection software required |
Dose neat or diluted through a metering pump into the feed line after the cartridge filter. The product is compatible with polyamide thin-film composite membranes and is approved for potable water production.
Culligan Bio Guard 41H01 Oxidising Biocide
Bio Guard 41H01 is an oxidising biocide for cooling towers, evaporative condensers, closed loops and process water. It controls the bacteria, algae and fungi that form biofilm on heat transfer surfaces.
Biofilm matters more than most site teams expect. A film under a millimetre thick cuts heat transfer more than a layer of scale several times thicker. On a chiller in Muscat running through summer, that shows up directly as higher power consumption and lost cooling capacity.
Typical practice on cooling systems:
- Shock dose two to three times a week rather than dosing continuously at low level
- Hold free residual oxidant between 0.5 and 1.0 mg/l for two to four hours after each shock
- Measure residual with a Hach DR300 pocket colorimeter or DPD test kit, not by dose volume alone
- Alternate with a non-oxidising biocide every few weeks where the system has a persistent biofilm problem
- Keep the biocide dosing point away from the corrosion inhibitor injection point
Do not feed an oxidising biocide upstream of RO membranes without dechlorination. Free chlorine destroys polyamide membranes, and the damage is permanent. Where a plant needs microbiological control ahead of an RO, the oxidant goes into the raw water tank and the residual is removed by activated carbon or sodium metabisulphite before the membranes.
Choosing Between Culligan and the Alternatives
We stock several equivalent products, and the right choice depends on water chemistry and on what the site is already running.
| Duty | Culligan | Alternatives we stock |
|---|---|---|
| RO antiscalant | Scale Guard 50M17 | Nalco PermaTreat PC-191T, Veolia Hydrex 4109 |
| Cooling water biocide | Bio Guard 41H01 | Sodium hypochlorite, non-oxidising biocides |
| Membrane cleaning | — | Veolia Hydrex 4730 and 4731 |
Switching antiscalant brands needs no plant modification. Change the pump setting to the new dose and watch normalised permeate flow and differential pressure for two weeks. Switching biocides on a cooling system needs more care, since residual chemistry and corrosion inhibitor compatibility both change.
Storage and Site Handling
Keep both products in shaded storage below 40°C in sealed containers. Store the oxidising biocide separately from acids and from reducing agents. Mixing an oxidiser with acid releases chlorine gas, which is the single most common chemical incident on plant rooms in this region.
Provide gloves, goggles and an eyewash point at the dosing station. Keep safety data sheets with the chemical, not filed in an office. We supply the SDS with every delivery.
General handling and exposure guidance for water treatment chemicals is published by the World Health Organization in its water safety guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What packing sizes are available?
Both products come in 25 kg containers, which is the standard size we hold for Oman and GCC supply. Larger drums can be arranged on order.
How long does 25 kg of Scale Guard last?
A 5 m³/h plant running 16 hours a day at 4 ppm consumes about 10 kg a month, so one can covers roughly ten weeks. We calculate exact consumption with the quotation.
Can Bio Guard 41H01 be used in drinking water tanks?
It is formulated for cooling and process water. For potable tank disinfection we supply products and procedures intended for drinking water service. Ask before applying any cooling water chemical to a potable system.
Do you provide dosing equipment with the chemicals?
Yes. We supply and install EMEC dosing pumps and complete dosing skids, including tanks, level alarms and injection assemblies.
