Walnut Shell Filter Media in Oman: 7 Proven Benefits for Oily Water

Walnut shell filter media is a crushed, graded nutshell granule used to remove oil, grease and suspended solids from industrial water. UV Water Systems supplies walnut shell filter media in Oman for new nutshell filters and for media replacement in existing units, with delivery from our Muscat store to sites across the Sultanate.

Oily water is a daily problem for oil fields, refineries, power plants, workshops and car washes. Sand filters struggle with it because oil coats the grains, the bed turns into a sticky cake and backwashing stops working. Nutshell media was developed for exactly this job.
What Is Walnut Shell Filter Media?
The media is made from the hard outer shell of black or English walnuts. The shells are cleaned, dried, crushed and screened into uniform mesh sizes. The result is a hard, angular granule with a specific gravity around 1.3, which sits between sand and anthracite.
Two properties make it useful for oily water:
- Oil affinity: the shell surface attracts and holds oil droplets, but it does not soak oil into the granule like a sponge.
- Easy release: during backwash, the granules rub against each other and the trapped oil and solids come off, so the bed returns to service clean.
How a Walnut Shell Filter Works
A walnut shell filter is a pressure vessel filled with a deep bed of graded nutshell granules. Water flows down through the bed. Suspended solids are held by straining between the granules, and free or dispersed oil droplets stick to the shell surface.
When the pressure drop rises, the filter goes into backwash. Most designs fluidize the bed with a mixer, an external scrubber or air scour, then flush the dirty water to drain. A typical backwash uses a small fraction of the treated volume, and the media goes straight back into service.
7 Benefits of Walnut Shell Filter Media
1. High oil removal
Well-designed nutshell filters typically remove 90% or more of free and dispersed oil, which helps sites meet discharge limits or prepare water for reuse.
2. Good TSS reduction
The deep bed captures fine suspended solids that pass through primary separators, which protects downstream cartridge filters, membranes and injection pumps.
3. Long media life
Walnut shell is hard and resists wear. With correct backwashing, most operators top up losses rather than replacing the full bed, and a full change is often needed only after several years.
4. No chemicals needed
Nutshell media cleans with water alone. You do not need solvents or surfactants to strip oil from the bed.
5. Lower backwash water use
Because oil releases easily, backwash cycles are short. Less water goes to drain than with a sand or multimedia filter on the same duty.
6. Handles upsets
Oil spikes that would foul sand for good are cleared from walnut shell in the next backwash.
7. Natural and biodegradable
The media is an agricultural by-product. Spent media is easier to handle than synthetic or polymer media.
Where Walnut Shell Filter Media Is Used in Oman
- Oil and gas: produced water polishing before re-injection or disposal.
- Refineries and petrochemical plants: removing hydrocarbons from process and cooling water.
- Power and desalination plants: oily drain and condensate treatment.
- Workshops, garages and car washes: recycling wash water after an oil separator.
- Ports, marine and offshore: bilge water and deck wash treatment.
- Steel, metal and food processing: removing grease and fats from wastewater.
Walnut Shell vs Sand Filter Media
| Feature | Silica Sand | Walnut Shell |
|---|---|---|
| Oil removal | Poor, fouls quickly | Very good |
| Recovery after backwash | Weak with oily load | Strong |
| Backwash water | Higher | Lower |
| Media life on oily water | Short | Several years |
| Specific gravity | About 2.6 | About 1.3 |
| Best use | Clean water with sediment | Oily water with TSS |
Sand is still the right choice for clean well water or municipal water. Our water treatment services team can help you decide which media fits your water analysis.
Grades and Packing We Supply
- Common mesh sizes: 8/16, 12/20 and 16/30 mesh (other grades on request)
- Washed, dried and graded media with low fines
- Packed in 25 kg bags, with larger quantities on pallets
- Technical data sheet and bed volume calculation on request
Tell us the vessel diameter, bed depth and the grade your filter manufacturer specifies. We will calculate the quantity and send a quotation. For background on oily wastewater, see the produced water overview on Wikipedia.
Tips for Replacing Walnut Shell Filter Media
- Drain the vessel and remove the old media fully.
- Check the underdrain, laterals and nozzles for damage or blockage.
- Load the support gravel if your design uses it, then the new media to the marked bed depth.
- Soak and backwash until the rinse water runs clear to remove fines.
- Record the clean-bed pressure drop so you know when to backwash later.
Our technicians can carry out media change-outs on site in Muscat and other regions of Oman.
FAQs About Walnut Shell Filter Media
Can I put walnut shell media in my existing sand filter?
Usually not. Nutshell filters need a backwash system that scrubs the bed, such as a mixer or air scour. A plain sand filter vessel may lose media or clean poorly. Share your filter drawing and we will check.
How often should the media be replaced?
It depends on the oil load and backwash quality. Many sites top up yearly and do a full change after several years.
Does walnut shell remove dissolved oil?
No. It removes free and dispersed oil and suspended solids. Dissolved hydrocarbons need activated carbon or other polishing steps.
Do you deliver outside Muscat?
Yes. We deliver to Sohar, Duqm, Salalah, Nizwa, Sur and oil field locations across Oman.
