TDS Level Muscat Water: What Is Safe and How to Test It in 2026

Ask ten people in Muscat what a good TDS level Muscat water should show and you get ten answers, most of them wrong. Some think lower is always better. Some think a high number means the water is dirty. Neither is true, and both misunderstandings cost people money on the wrong equipment.

Here is what the reading actually means, what range is normal across Muscat, and what to do about yours.
What TDS actually measures
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. A meter does not identify what is dissolved. It measures electrical conductivity and converts that to a number in parts per million (ppm). Calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulphate and bicarbonate all register. So does anything else conductive.
That matters, because a low TDS level Muscat water reading does not prove the water is safe. Bacteria, viruses and most organic contaminants carry no charge and register as zero on a TDS meter. TDS is a mineral indicator, not a safety test.
What is a normal TDS level Muscat water shows
Across the city we see a wide spread depending on the supply:
- Municipal desalinated supply: generally low, often well under 300 ppm at the tap.
- Roof tank storage: usually similar to the inlet, but stagnation and dust ingress can push it up.
- Tanker-delivered water: highly variable, and the variation between deliveries is the real problem.
- Borehole or well water in outlying areas: often several hundred to well over 1,000 ppm, with hardness to match.
The World Health Organization does not set a health-based TDS limit for drinking water, but notes that palatability drops as levels rise. Their drinking water quality guidelines are the standard reference.
How to read your number
- Under 50 ppm: Very low. Common straight off an RO membrane. Flat taste. Some people add a mineral cartridge for this reason.
- 50–300 ppm: The comfortable band for drinking. Good taste, no scale problem.
- 300–600 ppm: Drinkable but you will see scale on kettles and shower glass. Worth softening.
- 600–1,000 ppm: Noticeably mineral in taste. RO recommended for drinking, softener for the house line.
- Above 1,000 ppm: Treat before drinking. Also check hardness and chloride separately, because the TDS number alone will not tell you which mineral is dominant.
How to test the TDS level Muscat water at your tap
A handheld TDS or EC meter takes two minutes and costs less than a single delivery of bottled water. Do it properly:
- Run the tap for 30 seconds so you are testing supply water, not water that has been sitting in the pipe.
- Fill a clean glass. Rinse it with the same water first.
- Switch the meter on, dip to the marked line, wait for the reading to settle.
- Note the temperature. Cheap meters without automatic temperature compensation drift.
- Repeat at a second tap and at the tank inlet if you can reach it. A big gap between the two points tells you the tank is the problem.
Record the number with the date. A single TDS level Muscat water reading is a snapshot. A short log over a few weeks tells you whether your supply is stable, which matters most for tanker-fed properties.
What to fit, based on the reading
Match the equipment to the problem rather than buying the biggest system available.
- High TDS, high hardness: Softener on the main line, RO on the drinking line.
- Low TDS, taste or odour complaints: Carbon filtration. RO will not help much here.
- Low TDS, but tank storage: Bacteria risk, not mineral risk. A UV steriliser is the correct answer, plus periodic tank cleaning.
- Fluctuating TDS from tanker supply: RO, because it handles the variation without you having to monitor it.
Frequently asked questions
Is zero TDS water good for you?
It is safe to drink but tastes flat, and you lose the small mineral contribution water makes to your diet. Most people prefer a remineralised output in the 60–150 ppm range.
My RO output reads 400 ppm. What is wrong?
Usually a failing membrane, a stuck flush valve, or a bypass leak inside the unit. Compare feed and product readings. If rejection has dropped below about 90%, the membrane needs attention.
Does boiling reduce TDS?
No. Boiling kills organisms and drives off some volatile compounds. It concentrates dissolved solids rather than removing them.
