Evoqua Ultra Clear and LaboStar in Oman: Sizing Pre-Treatment for a Modular System

Evoqua Oman buyers choose Ultra Clear and LaboStar systems on modularity. You buy the configuration your lab needs and add stages later. That flexibility is genuinely useful in histology, microbiology and media preparation, where demand grows as the lab does.
The catch is that modularity applies to the purification stages, not to the feed. Whatever you bolt together, it still drinks from the same tap.
Media prep is a volume problem
Volume is where an Evoqua Oman system meets its limit. A microbiology lab preparing culture media is not drawing 2 litres a day. It is drawing tens or hundreds. Histology processing is the same. High-volume applications hit pre-treatment cartridges proportionally harder, and the cost gap between pre-treated and untreated feed widens with every litre.
At Oman feed quality — 200 ppm TDS on clean desalinated supply, 800–1,200+ ppm where tanker or well water enters the blend, hardness commonly 300–600 ppm as CaCO₃, free chlorine present in distribution — a high-draw lab can exhaust a cartridge rated for a year inside four months.
The three costs
Cartridges, doubled or tripled. Straightforward and easy to see on the purchase orders.
RO element replacement. Scale from hardness and chlorine attack on the membrane. Not a consumable, and priced accordingly.
Rework. Media that fails QC, stains that behave inconsistently, batches repeated. Nobody logs this against the water system, but it is the largest cost of the three in most labs.
What a pre-treatment skid changes
Ahead of an Evoqua Oman Ultra Clear or LaboStar system:
- Multimedia and sediment filtration for turbidity
- Activated carbon for chlorine and chloramine, protecting every membrane downstream
- Water softener sized to the lab’s real daily volume, not a nominal figure
- RO stage on Dupont Filmtec membranes, delivering 5–20 ppm TDS at the inlet
The Evoqua unit then does what it was designed to do — polish already-clean water — instead of acting as the entire treatment plant. Cartridge life goes to rated or better. The internal RO stops scaling. In the installations we maintain, consumable and service spend drops 70% or more.
Design it for where the lab is going
An Evoqua Oman skid should be sized for the lab you will have in three years. If the lab plans to add benches, analysers or a second processing line in the next two years, size the pre-treatment skid for that now. Oversizing pre-treatment is cheap. Retrofitting a bigger skid into a running lab is not.
We build in headroom as standard and specify the distribution loop so additional Evoqua modules can be teed in without touching the treatment train.
Evoqua Oman: what labs ask before they add a skid
Does a modular system still need pre-treatment?
Modularity buys you output, not protection. Evoqua rates cartridge and element life against a conditioned feed, so every module you add multiplies the same consumable problem unless the water reaching them is corrected first.
How do we size a skid for a growing lab?
On peak daily draw plus headroom, not on today’s average. Most Evoqua Oman sites we visit have already outgrown the assumption they were commissioned on, usually because a second bench or an analyser track was added after handover.
What quality reaches the Ultra Clear or LaboStar inlet?
5–20 ppm TDS, chlorine-free, softened. That holds polished output to ISO 3696 Type I and takes cartridge changes back to the rated interval instead of two or three times a year.

What we do
UV Water Systems designs, installs and services RO pre-treatment for laboratory purification systems across Oman. We measure your actual feed — pH, TDS, hardness, chloride, silica, free chlorine — and size to it.
The skid installs upstream of your existing system. Your Evoqua unit and its service arrangement stay exactly as they are.
14+ years in water treatment in Oman. ISO 9001:2015 certified. Annual maintenance contracts with scheduled service and documented water testing.
