Sartorius Arium in Oman: The TOC Monitor Is Telling You About Your Feed

The Arium range has one feature most competing systems do not: a built-in TOC monitor showing you, live, what the water actually contains. In Oman that turns into an early warning system for a problem most labs do not realise they have.

Reading the drift

A new Arium Pro on clean feed holds TOC in single digits and resistivity at 18.2 MΩ·cm. Watch the same unit over six months on unpre-treated Oman mains and the pattern is consistent: TOC climbs steadily through the cartridge cycle, then jumps in the last few weeks before the change.

That climb is the pre-treatment cartridge saturating. Organics and chlorine breakthrough happen well before the unit alarms. Labs running ASTM Type 1 for trace analysis are working with degraded water for weeks before the cartridge is officially due.

What is loading the cartridge

Three things in Oman supply, in order of damage:

Free chlorine. Present in Muscat distribution after re-dosing. It is absorbed by the pre-treatment carbon stage. Once that stage is spent, chlorine reaches the RO membrane and destroys it — permanently, not recoverably.

Hardness. 300–600 ppm as CaCO₃ in buildings on blended or tanker supply. Scale on the membrane surface, reduced flow, longer run times, higher energy.

Dissolved solids. 200 ppm on good desalinated supply, above 1,000 ppm where well or tanker water is in the blend. Every ppm is ionic load the polishing resin has to remove.

What pre-treatment does to the numbers

A correctly sized RO pre-treatment train ahead of the Arium:

  • Sediment and multimedia filtration
  • Activated carbon for chlorine and chloramine
  • Softener sized to your lab’s actual daily draw
  • RO on Dupont Filmtec membranes, delivering 5–20 ppm TDS to the Arium inlet

Watch the TOC trace after that goes in. It flattens. Instead of climbing through the cycle, it holds. Cartridges reach rated life instead of half of it. Consumable and service spend on the Arium drops 70% or more.

For a trace-analysis lab, the flat TOC line is worth more than the money saved. Reproducibility stops being a variable you fight.

Multiple units, one skid

Labs running an Arium Pro alongside an Arium Mini, or several benchtop units on the same floor, do not need separate pre-treatment for each. One skid sized to combined daily demand feeds them all, with a small distribution loop. That is usually the cheapest configuration per litre and the easiest to maintain.
