ELGA MEDICA units are everywhere in Middle East healthcare, and for good reason. They are built specifically to feed clinical diagnostics analysers with high-volume CLRW. In Oman hospitals they sit behind Roche cobas, Abbott Architect and Beckman Coulter lines.

Which is why the feed water question matters more here than anywhere else in the lab.

An analyser does not fail loudly

When a MEDICA’s purification packs saturate, the water does not stop. It degrades. Conductivity creeps up, TOC rises, and the analyser starts producing results that are inside the acceptable range but drifting. QC flags appear intermittently. Someone recalibrates. The flags come back.

By the time the water is identified as the cause, you have burned reagent, repeated patient samples, and lost days.

What Oman feed water does to a MEDICA

Hospital supply in Muscat is usually desalinated, 150–400 ppm TDS, but three things still hit the unit hard:

Residual chlorine. Re-dosed into the distribution network. It attacks the RO membrane inside the MEDICA directly. Membrane damage from chlorine is permanent, not a cleaning problem.

Hardness. Buildings on blended or tanker supply see 300–600 ppm as CaCO₃. That scales the membrane and shortens every stage downstream.

Variable supply. Hospitals on multiple sources see feed quality change week to week. The MEDICA has no way to compensate; it just consumes packs faster on the bad weeks.

For a high-volume MEDICA running a hospital analyser bank, pack and cartridge spend is a real line item. Doubling it is a real budget problem.

The pre-treatment answer

A dedicated RO pre-treatment train ahead of the MEDICA or PURELAB:

  • Multimedia filter for turbidity and particulate
  • Activated carbon for chlorine and chloramine — this alone protects the internal membrane
  • Softener sized to hospital daily volume
  • RO stage on Dupont Filmtec membranes, delivering consistent 5–20 ppm TDS regardless of what the building supply does that week

The MEDICA then runs on stable, low-ionic-load feed. Packs reach rated life. CLRW quality holds steady instead of drifting through the cycle. Consumable and service spend drops by 70% or more.

The stability matters as much as the savings. Consistent feed means consistent product water means analyser results you can defend in an audit.

Redundancy is part of the design

For hospital installations we size pre-treatment with duty capacity and, where the application justifies it, standby. If your analyser bank cannot stop, the water supply to it should not be a single point of failure. We build that into the design rather than leaving it as a spare-parts conversation later.
