Purite Integra HP in Oman: Central Lab Water Needs Central Pre-Treatment

A Purite Integra HP is not a benchtop unit. It is a plant. It feeds multiple laboratories or a full automated analyser track from a central point, through a ring main, at volumes where every design assumption gets multiplied.
That multiplication works in both directions. Good pre-treatment saves more here than anywhere else. Bad feed water costs more here than anywhere else.
The scale changes the argument
On a benchtop unit, poor feed water means an extra cartridge or two a year. On a central plant sized for a hospital laboratory block, poor feed water means:
- Pre-treatment vessels regenerating or changing out at multiples of the design frequency
- RO membranes scaling across the full array, not one element
- Reduced permeate flow at exactly the moment the analyser track needs volume
- A ring main carrying degraded water to every point of use simultaneously
One water quality problem becomes every lab’s problem in the same hour.
Oman feed water at plant scale
Muscat hospital and institutional supply is generally desalinated at 150–400 ppm TDS, but plant-scale systems have to be designed for the bad week, not the average week. Facilities on blended, tanker or well supply see TDS above 1,000 ppm and hardness of 400–600 ppm as CaCO₃. Free chlorine is present after network re-dosing and will destroy an unprotected thin-film composite membrane array outright.
A central plant designed on nominal figures rather than measured worst-case figures will underperform within the first year. We have been called in to correct exactly that more than once.
What a properly built pre-treatment train looks like
For central lab water at Integra HP scale:
- Multimedia filtration for turbidity and suspended solids
- Activated carbon, sized on contact time rather than flow rate alone, for chlorine and chloramine
- Duplex softener so regeneration never interrupts supply
- Antiscalant dosing on Emec Italy metering pumps where feed chemistry requires it
- RO stage on Dupont Filmtec membranes with Grundfos high-pressure pumping
- Instrumentation on feed and permeate so quality is logged, not guessed
Output to the Integra HP inlet sits at 5–20 ppm TDS, stable, whatever the building supply is doing. Consumable and service spend on the polishing plant drops 70% or more, and permeate flow holds through the year instead of decaying.
The uptime case is bigger than the cost case
For a hospital feeding automated analyser tracks, a water outage is a laboratory outage. Duplex softening, duty/standby pumping and adequate break-tank storage are not luxuries at this scale — they are what keeps a single failure from stopping diagnostics. We design that in from the start.
